Does QuantityWare BCP support solid products?

Yes.
Solid products (“solids”), that result from petroleum refining, are supported – if they need to be treated as SAP HPM (Hydrocarbon Products Management) material in your ERP system. Solid products are those, where no temperature or pressure dependance of relevant quantities (volumes and densities) is observable.

Solids (e.g. sulfur, pet coke, and others …), do not fall into the general product support (liquid or gaseous products*) as defined in the BCS Supported Products Manual . For solids, several solutions are available, which need to be exactly specified (conversion model, calculation examples, measurement standards involved) and assessed in your project by a QuantityWare Certified Consultant (QWCC) and customer experts. Based on the feedback from many QWCC, several solution approaches have been selected in the past 18 years for solid products:

As part of the QuantityWare BCP template, two template conversion groups are delivered for solids:

Advanced requirements – wet / dry conversions:

Legacy conversion group RAWS from SAP is delivered for solids (e.g. mining products like coal), where advanced requirements need to be implemented – e.g. conversion between wet and dry coal mass:

This conversion group requires an implementation of legacy SAP QCI BAdI Raw Material Conversion, such that the required solid product calculation logic is available:

With QuantityWare BCS 3.0, advanced crude oil conversion groups are delivered, that can be redefined to also cover e.g. pet coke calculations. Example: conversion group Q160 may be utilized such that the wet/dry or moisture % value is entered (besides the pet coke solid density – required for conversions between mass and weight) and gross and net masses, gross and net weights (and, if required, gross and net solid volumes) are easily calculated:

Example 1 – Absolute density:

Example 2 – API gravity

Entering a non-zero moisture % fraction leads to reductions of all relevant quantities, i.e. NSV (UoM BBL), NSW (UoM LTA) and NSM (UoM LTO) values:

Detailed requirements for solids quantity conversions can be very unique. In rare cases, a GCD or SCD may thus be needed for the implementation.

* The refining process of crude oil produces mostly gaseous or liquid products at normal conditions. However, e.g. asphalt/bitumen is typically present as a highly viscous / semi-solid product at normal conditions. In general, the availability of a set of national or international measurement standards (for the four types of supported standards for BCP) decides if a product can be supported. For solids, such standards are typically not available. Thus, basic engineering principles need to be specified and applied, which may differ between different companies.
